Internet Computer (ICP)

Layer 1 Mid cap Reviewed: 2026-07-02

Internet Computer (ICP) is an ambitious Layer 1 blockchain, built by the Dfinity foundation, that tries to be a decentralized alternative to big cloud providers like Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud. Instead of just handling tokens and simple contracts, it aims to run entire applications and websites fully on-chain — hosting the front-end, back-end and data all on its network of independent data centers. Developers deploy 'canisters' (a kind of smart-contract container) that can serve web apps directly to users. ICP is the token used to pay for computation (developers 'burn' it as fuel), to stake for governance, and to secure the network. Its bet is huge: become the decentralized backbone of the internet itself.

Where it stands today: ICP has real technical capability and genuine network activity — it processed billions of transactions in a month (reportedly more than some larger-name chains), with tens of thousands of deployed canisters, and it markets dramatically cheaper data costs than AWS. It's adding user-friendly features (like email account recovery) and leaning into the AI narrative as a decentralized-compute play. A 2026 proposal ('Mission 70') aims to cut its token inflation sharply. But ICP has been a long, painful story for holders — it trades far below its 2021 debut, and its grand 'world computer' vision has yet to produce breakout mainstream adoption. So today it's a technically powerful, ambitious platform still fighting the perception that it over-promised and under-delivered.
