Cosmos (ATOM)

Layer 1 Mid cap Reviewed: 2026-07-02

Cosmos (ATOM) is the token of the Cosmos Hub, the center of an 'internet of blockchains' — a whole ecosystem of independent chains built to talk to each other. Its big invention is IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication), a standard that lets separate blockchains send tokens and data between one another, and the Cosmos SDK, a toolkit used to build hundreds of chains (many major projects were built with it). The philosophy is the opposite of 'one chain to rule them all': many sovereign chains, each optimized for its purpose, connected by IBC. ATOM is the token of the Hub at the center, used for staking, governance and securing shared services.

Where it stands today: the Cosmos technology is a genuine success — IBC connects 100+ chains and hundreds of blockchains were built with its SDK, and a 2025 'Eureka' upgrade extended IBC to connect with Ethereum. The problem has always been the ATOM token itself: because every Cosmos chain is sovereign and doesn't have to use ATOM, the ecosystem thrived while ATOM captured little of that value, and it trades roughly 95% below its 2021 peak. A 2026 tokenomics overhaul tries to fix this — tying inflation to actual fee revenue, cutting emissions, and adding lock-based staking rewards, plus new institutional-grade features on the Hub. So today it's hugely influential technology whose token is fighting a long-standing 'great ecosystem, weak value capture' problem.
