Avalanche (AVAX)

Layer 1 Blue chip Reviewed: 2026-07-02

Avalanche (AVAX) is a Layer 1 blockchain platform built for speed and, above all, for letting anyone launch their own custom blockchain. Its signature feature is 'Avalanche L1s' (originally called subnets): application- or company-specific chains that run on Avalanche's technology but set their own rules — handy for games, financial products and enterprises that want a dedicated chain. The main network is fast and cheap and finalizes transactions in about a second, using a novel consensus that lets very large numbers of validators agree quickly. AVAX is used for fees, staking and securing the network; it has a capped 720 million supply and burns a portion of fees.

Where it stands today: the big recent change was the 'Avalanche9000' upgrade (late 2024), which cut the cost of launching an L1 by over 99% and scrapped the old requirement to stake 2,000 AVAX per validator. That kicked off hundreds of custom L1 chains in development across gaming, finance and enterprise. DeFi value locked on Avalanche sits in the low billions, and regulated AVAX futures (CME) now give institutions a familiar way to get exposure. So today it's an established, fast smart-contract platform betting its future on many custom chains rather than one crowded base layer.
